Major General Mamman Jiya Vatsa. Pictured in Lagos, 1978 (then as a Brigadier Gen.). Vatsa served as a Minister of the FCT and was a member of the Supreme Military Council till 1986 when he was executed following a trial by said council, (headed by Major General Ibrahim Babangida), for his involvement in an abortive coup. Vasta had participated alongside Muhammadu Buhari, Sani Abacha, Buka Dimka in the 1966 counter-coup headed by Murtala Muhammed. Outside his military occupation, Vasta was a poet. He published 8 adult poetry books and 11 for children. He was a member and great supporter of the Association of Nigerian Authors, helping with funds and hosting conferences. He donated a writer’s village to the organization, which is today, named after him.
